Security Policy Automatic Teller Machine (ATM)

Let's understand what transaction crimes can be done through ATMs and be aware of the signs by paying attention to the following:

  • ATM Skimming

Is a fraud technique where perpetrators try to steal a user's ATM card information and passcode using a specially designed tool. Perpetrators generally place a device called a "skimmer" on an ATM machine that makes a copy of the ATM card and stores the card's magnetic tape information. Then, the perpetrator usually installs a small camera or other device that can record when the user enters their passcode.

Skimming perpetrators then use customer data to create fake cards or "cloning" cards. In many cases, skimmers use fake cards and PINs to withdraw money from ATM machines.

How does skimming tool work?

To perform ATM skimming, the perpetrator usually:

·       Install the device in the card slot at the ATM machine to retrieve data on the card.

·       Attach the camera to see the keypad to peek and find out the PIN number.

  • Card Trapping and /or Cash Trapping

Is to take physical cards or physical money using a device such as a lighter, stick, rubber, thread or glue installed in the card slot at an ATM machine and a trap device at the point of cash exit.

Regarding the cash trapping case, after the victim leaves the ATM machine assuming there is a problem with the ATM device, the perpetrator will access the ATM to remove the trap made and take the money.

Regarding the card trapping case after the victim is trapped, the next step is for the perpetrator to try to get a physical card and PIN in various ways. One of them is the perpetrator installing a foreign object into the card slot at the ATM machine. When the Customer uses the ATM machine, the ATM card will be caught by foreign objects installed by the perpetrator so that it cannot enter or exit.

Then the perpetrator tries to get the Customer's PIN in several ways, for example pretending to offer help and asking the Customer to enter the PIN into the ATM machine.

Another way is that the perpetrator asks the Customer to contact the fake e-Channel Operation Help Desk, then the Customer will be asked to mention the PIN by the e-Channel Operation Help Desk officer.

  • Social Engineering

social engineering techniques are manipulation techniques that take advantage of human negligence or error in an attempt by the perpetrator to obtain funds or information from his victims.

Examples of some social engineering actions and how to avoid them are as follows:

·   Offer assistance to customers who are less fluent in using ATMs. When returning the card, the perpetrator will exchange the card and memorize the Customer's PIN and then the perpetrator will make transactions on the Customer's ATM card.

·   Ask for assistance to the Customer to make cash withdrawal transactions. In general, the perpetrator is an elderly person, pretending not to understand using an ATM and asking for help to make cash withdrawal transactions, when the Customer makes a transaction, the perpetrator will coordinate with his colleagues and accuse the Customer of stealing his ATM card and then blackmailing the Customer.

·      Ask for help to be transferred with a certain nominal then in exchange the Customer will be given a certain amount of cash. However, the cash given is indicated to be counterfeit money.

What does CCB Indonesia do to protect Customer's account from ATM Skimming?

We always try to prevent ATM skimming cases with several things including:

  • For now, CCB Indonesia ATM cards do not use magnetic stripe, but have used chips that have safer technology that aims to reduce the potential for fraud and increase security in card transactions.
  • CCB Indonesia ATMs have also used anti-skimmers to prevent ATM skimming so that customers feel safe and trust in transacting at CCB Indonesia in their financial management.

CCB Indonesia always monitors ATM skimming cases that occur, both locally and internationally. To anticipate the latest types of fraud.

Suspicious signs related to ATM Skimming – What ways should Customers be aware of?

Customers can identify suspicious signs related to ATM skimming in the following ways:

  • Does the ATM machine look normal? Watch out for physical changes or unusual additions to ATMs.
  • Are there signs of vandalism at the ATM machine? Beware when the Customer can see the remaining glue, exposed wires, double tape pieces, physical shapes that are not naturally seen at CCB Indonesia ATM machines.
  • The customer sees something suspicious in the card slot at the ATM (e.g. there is an additional device).

How can the Customer prevent Card and/or Cash Trapping hazards?

Customers can use several ways to prevent the dangers of Card Trapping, in the following ways:

  • Before the Customer uses an ATM, the Customer should pay attention to the condition of the ATM machine first before being used for transactions.
  • If there are unusual things such as foreign objects in the ATM card slot or in the slot where cash comes out, the Customer should not continue the transaction and report it through the Help Desk e-Channel Operation CCB Indonesia It is recommended that the Customer not panic when the ATM card cannot enter the ATM machine.
  • If there is someone who offers assistance, the Customer should not need to continue the transaction.
  • If the cash does not come out, make sure that there is no device attached to the cash exit. Customers can look for alternative ATM machines in other locations that are crowded to avoid cash trapping.
  • If the Customer's ATM card is swallowed, immediately contact CCB Indonesia's e-Channel Operation Help Desk to be able to immediately block the Customer's ATM card.
  • Furthermore, the Customer should not inform the PIN number to other people, including Bank officers.

How can the Customer prevent Social Engineering hazards ?

  • If the customer is not so fluent in using ATMs, you should invite family or trusted friends to accompany you, try not to make transactions at ATMs alone.
  • Avoid unknown people who ask for help, if someone asks for help and the customer wants to help, the person can be directed to ask for help directly to the security officer around the ATM directly.
  • Avoid ATMs with locations in quiet places / far from crowds.

If the Customer sees or experiences any of the suspicious signs above, immediately contact the e-Channel Operation Help Desk at (021) 5663809 – (021)5668292.

CCB Indonesia may change this Security Policy at any time to adapt to the latest situation and technology with prior written notice through any media. Customers can always review the latest CCB Indonesia information and security policies in https://idn.ccb.com/.
